Caring For & Cleaning Jewelry

As the proud owner of a beautiful piece of jewelry, it is extremely important to take good care of it. Below are some simple suggestions to help ensure that your jewelry will provide you and generations to come with years of enjoyment.

Basic Jewelry Care

  • ALWAYS put your jewelry on after applying make-up, hairspray, perfume, or cologne. These products contain chemicals that can damage all types of jewelry, especially pearls.
  • Do not wear jewelry when doing extensive household cleaning. Contact with abrasive cleansers such as bleach can cause extensive and irreversible damage. This is especially true with pearls as there are limited ways to clean and restore them once the damage has been done.
  • Do not wear jewelry in chlorinated water. The chlorine can permanently damage and discolor your jewelry.
  • Store your jewelry in separate compartments or boxes when you are not wearing it. Storing it together may cause unwanted scratches or damage.
  • Avoid hard impacts to diamonds and gems as they can scratch or chip.
  • Stop by Buccieri’s GEMS & JEWELRY every 6 months so that we can inspect your jewelry to ensure that there are no loose stones or other causes for concern.

Cleaning Guidelines

  • Cleaning your jewelry is one of the most important things you can do to help it maintain its original beauty.
  • Beware of using an ultrasonic cleaner as it can be extremely damaging to certain types of gemstones.

Diamonds

  • Use a mild solution of soap and warm water or a mix of rubbing alcohol and warm water along with a soft bristle brush to gently scrub the piece. Be careful not to scrub the piece too hard as it could shift the prongs holding the diamonds in place.

Colored Stones

  • Use a mild solution of soap and warm water or a mild jewelry cleaner along with a soft bristle brush to gently scrub the piece. Be careful not to scrub the piece too hard as it could shift the prongs holding the stones in place.

Pearls

  • Use a soft cloth to wipe your pearls clean.
  • Do not use any chemicals on pearls.
  • Avoid getting strands of pearls wet as they are usually strung on a silk cord which can stretch due to moisture.
  • Restring your pearls every couple of years if you wear them regularly.
